What type of Base Material should I use for my basket?

Carbon Steel (in natural finish):

Strong and inexpensive. Very limited corrosion resistance in natural finish. Baskets made from carbon steel are a great choice for manual solvent cleaning, oil dipping and indoor material handling applications where light rusting will not stain or contaminate parts.

Carbon steel wire mesh baskets should not be used without a surface coating for any long-term outdoor applications, in any aqueous (water-based) dipping or cleaning applications, or in any caustic environments.

304 Stainless Steel:

The most common of the industrial stainless steel grades. Good corrosion resistance in wet and mildly caustic environments. Good high temperature strength to 1300°F. Slightly stronger than carbon steel.

316 Stainless Steel:

Higher Nickel content than 304 Stainless Steel makes it slightly more expensive and more corrosion resistant than 304.  Good high temperature strength to 1300°F. 316 Stainless Steel Baskets are slightly stronger than carbon steel baskets.

What does “Natural Finish” mean on my baskets?

Many wire mesh baskets shown here (Carbon steel, 304 and 316 Stainless Steel) are shipped in a “Natural Finish”, which is the natural condition of the base material. The baskets are generally clean to the touch, but may have a slight brown discoloration around welds and may have very light process oils remaining on the surface.

What does “Electropolished Finish” mean on my baskets?

Some wire mesh baskets shown here can have an optional “Electropolished Finish”. (Stainless Steel base materials only. Not available on Carbon Steel.) Electropolishing is an process where the fully fabricated basket is immersed in electrically charged acid to drive off any surface impurities and any “free iron ions”. With the free iron removed, the top molecular layers of the stainless steel are very dense with chrome and nickel. This makes the surfaces very smooth, very clean, with improved corrosion resistance. Electropolished baskets are recommended for any ultrasonic or vapor degreasing applications. Although not the primary reason for the process, electropolishing makes the baskets very shiny.

How are my baskets made?

All wire mesh baskets shown here will have a round rod frame and handles which are formed on computer controlled bending machines. The frame parts are TIG welded together and the mesh lining is resistance welded into the frame. The entire basket is then completely deburred to remove any sharp edges and to blend the edges.

What Size Basket should I order?

Most baskets listed are made to “Approximate Outside Dimensions of Mesh Lined area, Excluding Handles” which is the outside size of the frame around the mesh lined area (See sketches). The “Overall Outside Dimensions” will include and handles or features welded outside of the basic frame. The “Inside Dimensions” of the baskets will be less than the corresponding outside dimensions by the frame rod diameter (one rod diameter from each side) and the thickness of the mesh. Detailed drawings are always available if your application is very size specific.

How do I decide what size mesh to order?

Wire mesh is designated by “Mesh Number” (number of wires per inch) and “Wire Diameter” (the diameter of each wire). A higher “mesh number” means more wires to the inch, a higher “wire diameter” means a thicker wire. (Example: 10 x 0.047″ mesh has 10 wires to the inch, each wire is 0.047″ diameter.) Opening Size” listed is the approximate size of the square openings between the wires.

Select a mesh for your basket with an opening size smaller than your smallest parts (so your parts don’t fall through), but large enough to allow good flow and drainage. In general, mesh with a larger wire diameter is more durable than smaller wire diameters. We have only a few common mesh sizes listed here, but there are an unlimited selection of mesh sizes and wire diameters available. If your application requires something not listed, please call us at 800-955-0868.

Where are my baskets made?

All of our products are manufactured entirely at our manufacturing plant: Three M Tool, 1038 Elm Street, York, PA 17403.

What is the weight capacity of my baskets?

Each category of baskets will list the intended design capacity for that style of construction. The general capacities shown assume evenly loaded parts in typical cleaning, dipping, lifting, sorting, and storage applications. This capacity will be reduced by parts with sharp corners that cut through the mess, excessive impact loading (dropping parts into baskets, or jerking or banging the loaded baskets), and/or any corrosion of materials. While baskets can be used for stacking, never use them for overhead lifting or to carry people.
